Planning to acquire a dental practice upon graduation? Evaluating a dental practice to buy, no matter how far it is into the future, takes a lot of understanding and time. As dentists, we have advisors who help us in every big purchase decision we make. However, we do need to know some financial basics ourselves, in order to audit others, recognize signs of embezzlement, gain confidence in hiring a team, and be SURE of a big financial decision, such as that of acquiring a practice. If every new dentist and dental student had the opportunity to see the red flags on a tax return, accurately estimate take home income from a P&L and develop basic accounting know-how, we would all make fewer mistakes in practice acquisitions.
